Our Company

Company History

TD Insurance Meloche Monnex is the largest direct-response automobile and home insurer in Canada.  We employ over 3000 individuals, but our story begins with one.

1949 Jean Meloche opened his first office in Montreal. J. Meloche Inc. expanded quickly; after just one year of operation the firm launched both a sponsored auto insurance program and an affinity marketing strategy focused on professional associations. Supported by direct-mail campaigns that hit home with the public, these policies became the backbone of our success.
1964 Pierre Meloche, Jean’s son, took over leadership of the company and ushered in an era of growth. By 1973 Meloche entered the national market, opening its first Toronto office. The growing team joined forces with Reed Shaw Osler, but chose to remain a separate entity.
1980s Meloche management branched out further, purchasing the personal insurance division of the Reed Stenhouse Group, and solidifying a Partnership with the London Insurance Group. This period of intense activity led to the creation of a holding company, The Optimum Financial Corporation Limited. After acquisition of the Security National Insurance Company, Meloche became the sole Canadian brokerage firm to own both brokerage and underwriting entities.
1990s In 1991, the holding company was renamed Meloche Monnex Inc. and, in 1998, successfully launched CT Direct Insurance. Meloche Monnex proudly became a Canada Trust company in 1997.
1999 Meloche Monnex marked its 50th anniversary. It was a year of much change. With offices strategically located across Canada, our client service network officially went coast to coast. TD Bank Financial Group announced its intention to acquire Canada Trust, and a year later Meloche Monnex officially became a member of TD Bank Financial Group, one of the largest financial services organizations in the country.
Since 2000 In the new millennium, Meloche Monnex Inc. has continued to expand. In 2001 the company acquired Canada Life Casualty Insurance Company, which, in combination with CT Direct Insurance became TD Insurance Home and Auto.
2002 Marked the end of an era as Jean Meloche, the company’s founder, passed away at the age of 88. His legacy of “putting people first” continued to drive the company forward. In 2004, Meloche Monnex Inc. acquired Liberty Mutual’s Canadian personal automobile and home insurance operations, positioning the company as Canada’s leading direct-response insurer.

Today, TD Insurance Meloche Monnex insurance programs are sponsored by over 800 councils, orders, professional associations, university and college alumni as well as university associations.
