Accident Forgiveness Solution
Frequently asked questions
Accident Forgiveness defined
Could you define Accident Forgiveness for me?
Accident Forgiveness means we agree to waive our right to adjust your auto insurance rate after an at-fault or partially at-fault accident. Ultimately, you are “forgiven” for your first accident.
At-fault or partially at-fault
What is an at-fault or partially at-fault accident?
It means you are at fault or partially at fault for damage sustained during a car accident. This can include damage to other vehicles and property as well as damage caused to your own vehicle.
You can be anywhere from 1% to 100% at fault in an accident. After an accident, the insurance company claims adjuster determines the degree of fault based on the circumstances surrounding the accident and specific government regulations. There is no one mathematical formula used to calculate the percentages of fault.
Any driver who is more than 0% at fault will have an "at-fault" accident on his or her insurance record.
Minor accident
My driving record is good but I had one minor fender bender just 5 years ago. Could I still be eligible for Accident Forgiveness?
No. You must be accident-free for the preceding 6 years. There are no exceptions.
Two accidents
If I had another at-fault accident after my first "forgiven" accident would this affect my premium?
Yes. Your second accident would have an impact on your premium.
Proving your accident-free record
How do I prove that I have been accident-free for 6 years?
If you have not been insured with us for the last 6 years, we will consult an automobile claims history report to confirm your driving record.
In Quebec, insurers have access to a governmental database where all claims are reported; this gives insurers direct access to the claim history of drivers. The database is called Fichier Central des Sinistres Automobiles and can be accessed by insurers and customers for information and to make any corrections.
Changing your vehicle
What happens if I change my vehicle while I have this insurance?
If you change your vehicle, your Accident Forgiveness coverage can be applied, provided you did not have an at-fault accident.
Friends and relatives
Does this coverage apply if a friend or relative uses my car and gets into an accident?Yes. The coverage applies. However, if your friend or relative has an accident with your vehicle, this will affect your file and premium in the same way that it would if you were driving.
